Engraved EUROPEAN .50 Cal Box Lock Pocket Pistol
French Style Turn Barrel, Folding Trigger Percussion Gun
Here we present an antique European .50 Caliber Percussion Pocket Pistol, made circa 1850, possibly in France. This pistol was intended to be carried much like the American Deringer pistol. It was small, but featured a large .50 caliber bore to make that single shot count. Unlike the Deringer, the barrel threads off for loading without tools. This gun is very attractive with its scroll engraving, scalloped grip, and twisted barrel. This gun also features a percussion cap trap in the pommel of the handle. The bottom of the frame and barrel are each marked with a dot and matching number. This was especially helpful to the maker as parts were not so interchangeable in those days. A very handsome example of a European conceal carry weapon from the 19th Century!
Overall condition is very good. The twist pattern, engraving and other markings are very clear. The metal has an aged patina to it. The grip is also very good. The bore is smooth and in good condition. The action would be functional if the mainspring were not broken. This would be a gun worthy of fabricating a new one!
