Description:

Antique ETHAN ALLEN .32 Single Shot DERINGER

Initialed 19th Century Self-Defense Pistol by Ethan Allen

Here we present an antique Ethan Allen .32 Single Shot Deringer, made in Worcester, Massachusetts circa 1865. Under 1,000 of these are thought to have been made. Ethan Allen was a manufacturer of tools beginning in about 1831. By 1837 he patented a double action mechanism and began producing firearms, for which he became famous. He made many different variations of single shot pistols and pepperbox revolvers, the latter of which achieved great popularity and were carried by many through the period of the Civil War. These pepperboxes were even more popular for a time than Samuel Colt’s revolvers! His company changed names many times, according to who he was partnering with. His firearms were prolific all the way until the time of his death in 1871.

This .32 pistol is very small, sporting a 3-inch, part-round, part-octagonal barrel. It measures only 5-1/2 inches from muzzle to the bottom of the bird’s head grip. The barrel swivels to the right, activating an automatic ejector, and allowing one to load the gun. It would have made an extremely lightweight and concealable pistol to carry to defend oneself. The left side of the barrel is marked “E. ALLEN & CO. WORCESTER MASSACHUSETTS/ALLEN’S PAT. MCH. 7 1865”. The inside of the left grip is marked, presumably with the initials, “NF”.

Overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a brown patina with traces of the original blue. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The grips show wear and are in good condition. The grip numbers also match. The bore is good. The action is strong. The hammer and firing pin appear to have been period repaired.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 4 inches.

Caliber: .32 Rimfire
