Description:
For sale, a nice example of a surrendered or captured WW2 Japanese Type 38 Carbine.  This example is serial number 59798 of the second series from the Kokura Arsenal in Japan.  The Type 38 Infantry Rifle was adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1906 and was the standard shoulder arm of the military from 1906 to 1939.  There were 3 versions produced: the standard long Infantry Rifle, the intermediate length Cavalry Short Rifle, and the Carbine listed here for sale.  All of these Type 38 models were chambered in the 6.5mm Jap cartridge.  This 6.5mm cartridge proved not powerful enough for military duty against the larger bodied Americans and as a result a new rifle was adopted by the Japanese in 1939, the Type 99 Rifle which was chambered in the more powerful 7.7mm Jap cartridge.  While some Type 38 production trickled into the very early 1940's, it paled in comparison to the Type 99 production that was in full swing by that point.  This particular Type 38 Carbine is in good condition overall.  It was surrendered or captured after the Japanese were allowed to grind off the Mum to "save face", the mum was a symbol of their Emperor and was sacred to the Japanese.  This carbine appears to have been issued and used in combat and as such, has some "wear and tear" that you would expect from a battle used carbine.  The original factory bluing still looks good overall but does show some thinning and discoloration in areas.  The floorplate shows the most finish loss as it's the natural balance point when carried one-handed and was exposed to sweat and friction more than anywhere else.  The bore is excellent in this carbine, it is bright with sharps lands and grooves in the rifling.  The original factory straw colored small parts shows traces of the yellow finish in the protected areas but are otherwise bare.  The original stock has some dings and dents but is 100% solid with no cracks or repairs.  The 2-piece buttstock matches nicely unlike many you will see, and is still tight to the upper portion of the stock with no gap.  The original handguard also matches nicely and is in great shape with no cracks.  The bolt is a serial numbered mis-match but fits perfectly and locks up tightly.  Everything works 100% on this Type 38 Carbine like the day it left the Kokura Arsenal.  It is 100% all-original and complete except for the missing cleaning rod and would be an excellent addition to any World War 2 collection.  These Type 38 Carbines are getting harder and harder to find and more expensive every year.  This Type 38 Carbine could be displayed or shot, and is a great investment at $425.
