Description:
SOLD...Antique 1873 Winchester 44-40 with octagon barrel. Here is a decent ole 1873 Winchester. It is in the highly sought after 44-40 caliber and with the octagon barrel. Has the standard 24” barrel. The S/N is 157546 and made in 1884.. The bore is a good shootable bore with strong rifling and has the usual roughness from black powder. No big pits or craters and no rings or bulges. It shoots just fine. Mechanics are excellent and it feeds, fires and ejects just fine. No backed out primers or bulges cases. Hammer notches are positive but the trigger is a little light but will not”bounce off” or “push off” and is safe but is just a little light or a little lighter than usual. Just use common sense and caution if you plan on shooting this ole 73. Markings are all very good. Original rear sight and the front sight looks like a very old period of use replacement but looks great on the gun. Original dust cover that is still very tight and retracts with the lever throw. It still has that almost magnetic feel when you close it. The screws are decent but show some turning on a few but all are very serviceable. The metal is nice and smooth with no pitting and has that untouched plumb brown color that has never been cleaned on or messed with just the way you love to find these. Has some dings and scratches but not a bad looking gun at all. A very small ding in the mag tube but does not in any way effect the function of loading. The forearm wood is rough with a sliver missing on the left side the entire length along the barrel channel as you can see in the photo. The wood is very thin in this area and not uncommon to see this on well used Winchesters. Also a large gouge towards the bottom on the left side also see photo. The right side is perfect with just the minor dings and scratches and fits tight to the metal. If you have a better forearm to put on this gun it would help the looks and bring up the value quite a bit... The butt stock is in much better condition with no splits or cracks. It fits very tight and even with the metal all around and has never been cleaned on or sanded on. Does show a gouge on the lower right side right above the lever see photo. All in all, not a bad ole 73 that has seen some honest use and a little abuse but you have to remember these earlier guns were very heavily used sometimes and used as daily tools just to survive. It is what it is.... Some of these early guns very seldom seen the indoors which in modern day would be about the condition of an old barn.. Indian guns MIGHT have seen the inside of a tee-pee once in a while!!! Getting hard to find these fairly early guns in 44-40 with octagon barrels that I can sell for less than $2000!!! $50 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. Very reasonable price so don't miss it. I get calls on about every Winchester AFTER it has already sold!!! Thank you for looking and check back often as I have many more guns to get listed soon..
