Description:
Engraved and signed Winchester 1886 takedown 45-70 in wonderful condition. We are extremely proud to offer this very special Winchester 1886, decked out in engraving and special ordered in takedown form. Made in the year of our Lord 1914, it is hard to believe she is 103 years old. The wood is in good condition, with some light losses around the ends of the tangs. The blue is deep and rich, and the markings are clear and easy to read. Besides being a very hard to find takedown with a full length magazine, she is very nicely engraved. Master engraver Virgil Graham put his touch to this rifle, and left his signature in steel. It is so tiny, it at first looks like a scratch on the bottom of the receiver. Graham passed away in 2003, but he certainly left his mark upon this world. He is known for engraving the guns used in the Western "The Quick and the Dead", and I have seen his work on a few guns at the big s. He dedicated himself to work in the style of the old masters, and he succeeded. The engraving on this '86 looks like early Conrad Ulrich work, and the deer are just about identical to some found on my old Marlins engraved by Ulrich. Photo 14 depicts a Marlin engraved by one of the Ulrich brothers before they went to Winchester. It extends to the top and bottom of the receiver, forend caps, and lever. This 1886 is chambered in the sought after 45-70, one of the most powerful rounds of the era. This model was another of John Browning's inventions. The receiver is carved from a 40 ounce block of steel, and two large lugs hold the bolt forward to handle the high power rounds found around 1900. The 26 inch octagonal barrel is another rarity on a gun made in 1914, when round barrels had almost taken over. The bore is good, with plenty of shine and strong rifling. She takes down in about ten seconds, and locks up tight just as fast. If you have shopped the gun market for an engraved Winchester, you know that they often exceed five figures on the price tag. I will start this one much lower. If you have been looking for the right Winchester 1886, with the added clout of special order features and game scene engraving, but don't want to break the bank, then look no further.
