Description:

Antique SHARPS New Model 1863 Cartridge Carbine

Post-Civil War Conversion to 50-70 GOVT

Here we present an antique Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine, made circa 1863, then converted to 50-70 Govt circa 1867 for use in the West by the federal government. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War, and afterward, the U.S. contracted with Sharps to convert them at the factory to shoot metallic cartridges. Just over 31,000 firearms were converted in this manner, in several different variants. They went on to experience some of the most exciting times in American history during the Indian Wars, the settling of the West, and the connecting of the coasts with the railroad.

This specimen is an example of one of the conversions which utilized at sleeved, three groove barrel, chambered for 50-70 Govt. Out of the 31,000 converted, this type of conversion made up about 27,000.

Overall condition is good. The iron parts have a smooth, even, brown patina. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock has some large gouges that occurred during the period of use, they have worn smooth with use and age, giving it lots of character. The wrist has a stable crack. There are several characters carved into the butt stock. The bore is in good condition. The action is fine.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 21-1/2 inches in length.

Caliber: .50-70 GOVT

Bore is in good condition. The firing mechanism is functional.

Overall condition as seen in photos.

Here is a great example of a Civil War Sharps that went West after the war. A great piece for your collection!
