Description:
Winchester Model 1897 12 Gauge
TAKEDOWN, 26” & 28” BARRELS, 99% FACTORY FINISHES, 1953

General Specs: Winchester, Year 1953, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 12oz, Pump Action
Serial Number: 986219

Winchester came out with the Model 1897 pump action shotgun as an improvement to their Model 1893.  In production from 1897 to 1957, there were over 1 million Model 1897 pump guns manufactured.  An interesting note about the Model 1897 is that they were a favored weapon of the Vietnam soldiers for jungle warfare.  Reason #1 was that they were carried fully loaded with the hammer down, the hammer being the safety.  But, unlike other firearms that made a “click” when the safety was disengaged, you could pull the trigger on the 1897 while cocking the hammer and when the hammer was all the way back, the trigger could be released and the hammer held at full cock…SILENTLY.  The soldiers new the “click” could them the element of surprise, a very important life/death issue.  In addition, the Model 1897 can “slam fire”, meaning holding the trigger down while you ejected a spent shell and slam the forend forward would fire the next shell and one could unleash 8 rounds of buckshot in a matter of seconds.  This gun, sn986219 made in 1953, though more of a field gun than a battle weapon, the features could still be of importance today.   It is not difficult to find a nice M1897 in decent, functional condition.  THIS M1897 IS A VERY SPECIAL GUN INDEED, as it shipped from the factory as a takedown model with 2 sets of barrels; a 26” Modified choke and a 28” cylinder choked barrel.  MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE GUN HAS LIKELY NEVER BEEN AFIELD, AS THE ENTIRE GUN AND BOTH SETS OF BARRELS RETAIN 99% VIVID FACTORY FINISHES, INCLUDING THE WOOD.  The stampings and lettering are all crisp, the factory machining and polishing marks are undisturbed, all numbers match.  All knowledgeable Winchester collectors will concur that this is not a restored gun, but the “closet queen” we all hope to find on our treasure hunt for fine Winchesters.  It is rare indeed to come across such a gun, as most all were well used tools of the day.  If you like the gun and want VFI to custom fit the set to a quality case, including accessories and a Winchester “makers” label, we can do that within 3 weeks of purchase for an additional charge.  Anything Winchester that is in mint condition and “vintage” is a grand investment vehicle for your hard-earned cash.  To find a two-barrel set in a minty Model 1897 is indeed a grand opportunity, and these guns are just plain fun to shoot.  Thanks for looking and don’t let this one get away!
