Description:
This beautiful 1895 took a bit of detective work to sort out. It had been offered as an all original gun by another dealer for a god awful amount of money, had it been 100% un altered that may have been accurate price.  This is what is known per a recent  Cody search and the original 1975 Winchester Museum Factory letter that is included with the purchase.:

So here is what the detective worked had resolve.  The rifle now has a correct Winchester metal checkered Butt plate on the original stock and the fitment looks to be factory  I believe it was under one of the 2 work orders.
The Rifle is now a short rifle at 22", the bore is mint and the installation is undoubtedly Winchester repair or custom work done in 1931 or early 32 as it is a proof steel barrel and marked made n the USA on the right side. The two digit date under the barrel is 31 so that is consistent.  The new barrel has a near perfect bore and 08& blue, when you view it close you can see the darker finish on the barrel and lighter more blushing finish on the receiver, Both the barrel and receiver and proof marked which supports the Winchester rebarrel claim. I believe the Lyman front sight was removed from the original barrel and reinstalled on this one as was the original checkered sporting rifle forend.  The new barrel has factory drilled and plugged carbine sight holes but the configuration as finished is of a short rife.
The original Lyman Rear sight has the correct pre 1905 WR mark
The fancy stock is spectacular, The receiver shows far less than normal wear and above average original finish, yes there are some dings and light scratches but it is 115 years old.   The pictures tell the tale that this is a special and very pretty gun.  I can speculate that the original barrel was replaced to correct a bad bore due to being used with corrosive ammo, or and in my opinion the most likely scenario is it was replaced with an original caliber barrel in short rifle length to provide better balance, this gun balances perfectly just forward of the lever on the magazine and as this and every other 95 show that is the most common contact and carry points.
The interior of the gun is very clean and retain a high degree o original finish.
