Large SPANISH Made Antique SHARPS PEPPERBOX Pistol
Marked “M.A. PLACENCIA 1877”
Here we present an antique Four Barreled Pepperbox Pistol, made circa 1877, in Placencia, Spain. This unique pistol was made in the likeness of Christian Sharps’ famous invention, which utilized a four-chambered barrel cluster with a revolving firing pin. This pistol was made to serve as a concealed carry option for self-defense during the tumultuous 19th Century. Spain has long been known for their manufacture of small arms, as well as their willingness to borrow designs without license. The latter was largely due to the Spanish government’s lack of protection of patents if that product was not being manufactured inside Spain.
This specimen is an up-sized version of Sharps’ normal product offerings, and chambered for a larger cartridge. However, it is not an exact copy, as it features a radically different styling, grip angle, access to the breech and an ejector. The frame and recoil shield have been engraved in a checkered pattern. The ejector is visible protruding out of the muzzle area, though it has lost the piece that interacts with the rims of the cartridges. The top of the barrel cluster reads “M.A. PLACENCIA 1877”.
The overall condition is fine. The period nickel finish is 95%. The markings are legible. The original grips are solid with good, hand-made checkering. Bores are clearly rifled and in very good condition. The action is functional.

Caliber: .35 rimfire
