Description:
Vic Olson Gunmaker, Inc. (5002 Countryside Drive, Imperial, Missouri), built this custom rifle in 1983, the year he incorporated his business and the year my book, The Rifleman’s Rifle, was published.
Action: Olson started with a Pre-64 Model 70 Featherweight barreled action made by Winchester in 1961 in .243 Winchester. It has a 22" factory Featherweight barrel without open sights, standard 3-position Model 70 wing safety and Model 70 trigger. Olson changed the trigger guard to blued steel and set the trigger at an amazing 1 lb. 9 oz. He also jeweled the bolt & follower and honed the rails and bolt as smooth as silk.
Stock: The maker chose his classic style custom stock shape for a select piece of English walnut with great figure, rich color and contrasting dark streaks running the full length of the profile on both sides. For the checkering (Olson’s forte), he executed a complete wrap-around point pattern that is extremely well cut and of the correct style. His inletting is excellent. For the balance of the design, he cut a perfectly-shaped shadowline cheekpiece, and added a steel grip cap and a Biesen checkered steel buttplate with engraved screws.
A Special Feature: One thing I really liked when I first saw this rifle: it is very hard for a master gun maker like Vic Olson to come up with a design feature that differs from the pack, without it looking either bazaar or radically different to spoil the classic look. Olson is one of the few I have ever seen that was able to pull it off here by inlaying the forend tip with an Ebony insert instead of adding an ebony tip. The visual is pleasing, the profile remains perfectly classic, yet the ebony inlay still serves its purpose of deflecting a to the nose without denting the softer walnut. And, it would appear this solution would be more difficult to do.
Condition: The bore is excellent, the blue remains at 98%, the oil-finished stock at 99%, and the checkering is at 100%.
The LOP is 13 ¾”, weight 7 lbs. 7 oz. I’ve shot this rifle very little as the condition shows, but I found it to be deadly accurate especially with that amazing trigger pull.
About the Maker: I chose this maker because of his burgeoning reputation at the time my book came out, for his fabulous workmanship coupled with his taste for the classic lines of what an American classic styled bolt rifle should be. I knew Mr. Vic Olson had been a gunsmith at Browning Arms in Arnold, Missouri before starting his own business of building custom rifles in the 1970's and early 80's. He never advertised, he didn’t need to, those like me who knew of his work, kept him busy. But as busy as he was, sometime in the early 1980s, Mr. Olson quit full-time gunmaking for a more lucrative career away from the gun industry. As George Caswell of Champlin Firearms Inc. once remarked about him,
“He (Vic Olson) can flat inlet, shape and checker with the best of them. His checkering is as good as the best.”
Scope: A period high-end Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x40 with fine duplex reticle mounted with proven Burrris 2-piece scope bases with angle-lock bottom-screw rings, a set-up for a nice custom look and yet for consistent accuracy from hunt to hunt.

For this auxiliary collection, I chose custom rifles that were built only with renown Winchester pre-64 Model 70 actions and made only by best makers. The work of many of these makers numbered so few that their names were never developed to the heights that equaled their talent and quality of craftsmanship.
