SOLD ** W&C Scott & Son, SXS, Hammer gun, 12 GA & 28 GA, 30”, 2 ¾”, FIRST TOP LEVER
W.& C. SCOTT & Son, 10 Gt Castle Street, Regent Circus, London, built this SXS, Bar-action Hammer gun, 12 GA, 30'', S & LM, originally in 1887 (Serial No. 42909). It has been re-proofed to completely handle modern ammunition and is now set up with extra 28 GA Briley Tubes.
Shooting a gun with hammers is a lot of nostalgic fun and with this one, you have pride of ownership as well. I didn’t know it until I researched it, but W&C Scott & Son (not Webley & Scott), had a reputation on par with Purdey when this gun was made. It’s rep was so good that when the name became available for sale, Holland & Holland purchased it (1985) and made several guns under the W & C Scott name, selling them for very high prices.

This gun is the classic English live pigeon gun, double triggers, a straight-hand English grip, a splinter forearm with an A&D release (one of the earliest of this period), a wavy matted concave rib, casehardened receiver, nearly fully engraved with fine scroll & rosette, a checkered butt, and a gold oval for the owner’s initials.
The bar action locks up with two Purdey underlugs and a doll’s head extension that fits into the Scott spindle type lever.
It is Very Important to note that W.& C. Scott & Son developed the Scott spindle which is the method used by EVERY top opening shotgun today, side by side and/or over and under. And their hammer guns like this were the first shotguns in which W.& C.Scott & Son employed the new innovation.
It has been professionally restored to function with modern ammunition bringing it into the 21st Century. To shoot nitro ammo, the barrels were sleeved by Holland & Holland with modern steel barrels with 2 3/4" chambers, then proofed to 3 1/4 Ton, and fitted with the extra Briley 28 gauge tube set. The 12 bores are choked: right .005 (skeet); left .015 (light modified).
The stock is original, restoration brought out the original warm rich streaky color of the beautiful wood tones of the AAAA fancy English Walnut with marble-cake figure. The hand-checkering is of BEST quality, fully wrap around on both forearm and stock and very fine at 28 lpi with perfect borderless patterns. There are two wrap-around patterns on the stock: over the wrist and under the toe line along the elegantly inlaid lower tang. Inlays and metal to wood junctures could not be tighter. There are 5 masterful inlays in the wood besides those needed for the action: over the wrist the top receiver tang ends in a bulbous configuration; on the underside, an inlaid silver oval, and the lower tang which terminates in a cascaded spear point; and on the forearm, the A&D release, and the very Victorian-shape metal forearm tip with its fancy shape.
As to metal finish, the receiver, sidelocks, top lever, forearm iron, and forearm tip are color case-hardened showing some of the original colors. The blued components are the A&D release, the trigger guard, the lower tang, and the barrels.
It has classic live pigeon dimensions of 14 5/8” x 1 ¼” x 2” Weight 7 lbs 5oz, and comes to the shoulder with perfect sighting alignment.
The barrel rib is inscribed, “W & C Scott & Son, London” sold from their London showroom at 7 Dorset Place, Pall Mall.
Inside, the forearm has 4 screws that are indexed and the serial number is inscribed. Barrel flats are marked .732” right and left. Also stamped is 2 ¾” and 3 ¼ Tons with the word “SLEEVED” which is why this 1887 gun can shoot modern ammo. On the water table of the action, the serial number is inscribed again and the words: “W & C Scott & Son Makers.” There are two sets of English proof marks on each side of the water table, indicating that one set is for the original barrels and a new, second set is for the new barrels.
Condition is “Excellent Plus, original as professionally restored” and comes in the original maker’s case.
