Description:
SOLD...Antique rare Whitney Kennedy rifle round barrel in the sought after 44-40 caliber. Here is a very nice Whitney Kennedy rifle. Has the standard 24” round barrel. In the 44-40 caliber. Also a very early S/N 1734 with the “S” shaped lever that brings a premium on this model. S/N matching on the lever also. Only 15,000 MFG from 1879 to 1886 so a very limited supply of these rifles ever made. The bore is very nice showing very strong and deep rifling all the way through. Just shows some light roughness from black powder use but no deep pits, rings or bulges. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. I have fired this gun several times and the bore will clean out to much better condition with some shooting and cleaning. The metal is an untouched medium brown patina never cleaned on or messed with. Shows some brown staining scattered around the gun but no pitting at all. Has the original front and rear sights. The dust cover screw is an old replacement I think as it sticks up above the dust cover the width of the screw head. I think they are suppose to fit flush with the cover but I might be wrong on this one... Also the receiver has a small crack on both sides on the dust cover rail {see photos}. This is not the bolt rail and they look as old as the gun and are not growing or going anywhere. This is a bad design on the makers part as the metal is very thin in this area and probably a lot of these have the same cracks. It is caused by the bolt pushing the hammer back which in turn pushes up on the bolt causing the stress. It is safe and does not in any way affect the safety or shooting of the gun. As with all of these old guns, you are responsible for shooting any of them. The markings are readable as far as the barrel address goes with the lighter stamped “Kennedy” after the main address. Very good caliber markings. The upper tang markings are all readable as well.  S/N is clear also. The wood is very nice. The forearm fits tight to the metal with NO splits or cracks. Still shows about 75% original varnish. Shows some very minor dings and scratches from honest use. The butt stock is very nice as well. Fits tight to the metal with a little swelling on the left side by upper tang but no slivers missing. Shows some old varnish added years ago I think. Has some dings and scratches and a gouge about an inch long near the bottom but it is not too deep. Also a very minor and short grain split by the upper tang on the left side that is solid.. Just shows honest use and no abuse. The wood is actually pretty nice on this gun and it looks much better than I describe but I want to be honest about everything and nothing hidden.. The forearm cap screw is burred up and one badly burred up screw on the left side of the frame. As I always say, if you want any close up detailed photos of any of the markings or screws just let me know and will gladly e-mail them to you. I want to let all the buyers see what they are spending their money on... Not a bad ole Whitney rifle over all. Not many ever made and this one has a great bore and looks very nice and honest. I think I have it priced reasonable considering it does have a few warts and if it was perfect with no issues it would absolutely be priced higher. Shop around and compare and then call me!!! You do not see very many of these for sale.... $50 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or photos. Thank you for looking and check back often as I have many more antique guns to get listed soon.
