Description:
SOLD...Antique 1873 Winchester octagon barrel in 38-40. Here is a very nice 1873 Winchester.... . Looks like a small bullet or buckshot in the stock. Will get to that later. Very interesting. Has the standard 24” octagon barrel. S/N 136764 so fairly early third model made in 1883. The bore is about average for these black powder rifles. Shows good rifling but also has some pitting scattered about. Shows a couple half circle spots of pitting but NO bulges or rings. As always, these 38-40 shoot great even with far less then perfect bores as is the case with this one. This is by far the best shooting caliber of the 73's and has and will be my favorite forever. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. Perfect hammer notches and strong springs throughout. Still has the original front and rear sights with the front being the blade type and the rear the standard sporting style. The markings are very good but shows some wear to the caliber markings and the bottom of the part of part of the S/N {see photos} but all are readable and the barrel address is excellent. Still has the original dust cover that is loose as is very common and should be retracted by hand. Very hard to find these with tight dust covers anymore. The metal is a very nice plumb brown patina that has not be cleaned on or messed with. Just the way you love to find these as so many have been clean to gray. NO pitting on the gun anywhere but just a small specks on the bottom of part of the S/N.. That is it !!!. The screws are clean and not all burred up but the upper tang and the lever screw show some turning but nothing butchered from tinkering and all are very serviceable. A very nice looking ole 73. The wood is good with the forearm showing a tight grain split on the upper right side along the barrel channel.{see photo}.. It is tight and not all the way through. NO other splits or cracks and hardly any handling dings or scratches!!! The butt stock is very nice with no splits or cracks. It might have been clean long ago as there is a small gap at the receiver towards the top area only. {see photos} It fits perfectly tight at the bottom receiver and both upper and lower tangs. May have just shrunk a little?? Who knows. A little shy at the butt plate toe as is very common but does not detract from this nice ole 73. No slivers or missing pieces. No big gouges, deep scratches or dings either.. Nice wood throughout.. Very interesting on the right side is a small piece of lead either a small caliber bullet or buckshot. This gun might have stopped a bullet at one time so this gun might have seen some action in a feud of some sort. It was this way when I got it and I have left it the way it is. Who knows what happened and of course we will never know. The old saying “if this gun could talk” fits this one perfectly as I bet this one really does have a story to tell.. That is about it on this one. Just a very pleasing looking 73 that has not been messed with much at all and getting harder to find these that I can sell for less than $2000 anymore. As cheap as you will find a working 73 and fairly early third model to boot. Just shows some honest wear with no abuse and a very nice looking gun here. $50 insured shipping and call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. Thank you very much for looking and check back often as I have more to get listed.
