HOPE” Stamped into Stock & Dated “1864” Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, made by Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1864. The M1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel, and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike solid, round ball. This Model 1863 “Type II” specimen has the name “CP. HOPE” neatly stamped into the walnut stock, just forward of the butt plate tang. The “CP.” may be his rank of Corporal or it may be his first two initials. Some deeper research may reveal more about the man. The lock is marked “US SPRINGFIELD”. The back of the lock and the top of the barrel are dated “1864”. The left side of the walnut stock still bears the government inspector cartouches. One is “ESA” for Erskine S. Allen. The left side of the barrel wears the “VP” eaglehead proof marks. The overall condition is near fine. The metal surfaces are dark and untouched. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is very nice and smooth. The bore is very well-rifled and clean. The nipple has been replaced at some point, suggesting that it has been shot more recently than the Civil War. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic example of the everyman’s Civil War rifle musket, ready to go and with a soldier’s name attached. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40 inches. Caliber: .58 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
