BELGIAN Antique TURN BARREL Percussion Pistol
19th Century Conceal Carry Pistol
Here we present an antique Belgian Turn Barrel Percussion Pistol, made circa the 1840s in Liege, Belgium. This type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries, in Europe, as well as the colonies. It could be stowed in the top of a boot, the belt, waistband or even a large pocket. It was of course, made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.
This specimen is features a .47 caliber, octagonal, turn-off barrel. This was advantageous to the user as shoving a ball with a ramrod via the muzzle was quite difficult. Loading from the breech allowed a larger ball to be used, improving the gas seal and making this pistol more efficient. The bottom of the frame bears initials, which are likely maker’s marks. The left side of the frame bears a Liege proof.
Metal surfaces are somewhat bright. Some of the twist is yet visible in the barrel. The markings are legible. The wood grip is smooth and in good shape. The bore is smooth with wear. The action is strong.
