Description:
Antique 1873 Winchester round barrel 38-40 caliber. Very nice looking 1873 Winchester. In the great shooting 38-40 caliber. Has the standard 24” round barrel. S/N 228242 and made in 1888.. To get this issue out of the way, it has a bulge in the end of the muzzle. Amazingly it still shoots great!!! The bore is VERY good with strong rifling all the way to the end of the muzzle. Just shows some VERY minor roughness and no big pits or craters. No breaks in the rifling at all. This is proof that these 38-40's will shoot even with a bulge at the muzzle !!!! I test fired it thinking I was wasting my time with this one but I was wrong. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly with no bulge cases or backed out primers. The original dust cover still retracts with the lever throw. Hammer notches are perfect and positive. The metal is a very pleasing plumb brown patina that has never been cleaned on or messed with at all. It has very good traces of blue remaining around the side plates of the receiver and the bottom tang around the trigger area. {see photos}.. It shows some surface crud in a small area about 3 inches long on the right side of the barrel that will show some light pitting if cleaned I would say. The butt plate shows some common roughness and surface crud as well. There is a ding by the front sight on the left side. The markings are all very good as you can see but the caliber markings on the brass carrier block have worn off. The rear sight is an older replacement {see photo} and the front sight is a newer replacement. Still has an excellent sight picture when looking down them. The wood is good. The forearm is excellent with NO splits, cracks or repairs and it still fits very tight and proud to the metal. Shows a couple very small and minor handling dings and that is it. The butt stock is not so lucky. It has a sliver missing by the upper tang on the left side{see photo}. But it still fits tight and proud to the metal everywhere else. No other splits or cracks and again shows some minor and honest handling dings. This chip could be very easily repaired and the wood would grade about excellent. The screw heads are all very good and not all burred up. A couple are correct replacements I think but do not detract from this ole 73. Not a bad ole 73 if you want a great shooter and can live with the bulge in the barrel. I bought this one through an with no mention of this issue... Go figure. This is what you get folks from buying through some of these s with no guarantees on what you will get. They said the bore was excellent !!!! Well, it is what it is. I know what this gun is worth to me in parts and I will keep it listed until it sells OR I need 73 parts and then it will be parted out and the barrel scrapped. I hate to do this to the ole girl but I got'a do what I got'a do.. Life goes on. If you happen to have a 38-40 round barrel then an easy swap would fix you up also.. $50 insured shipping.
