Nathan Starr was the fledgling United States’ largest sword maker, founded after the Revolutionary War in 1798, making swords for the government. It would not be long before the British were back on America’s shores for the War of 1812, a conflict that would last through 1815. A new contract was made between the US government and Nathan Starr, this time for a pattern of Dragoon saber that was directly influenced by the British Pattern of 1796 being used by the enemy. The contract was only for 10,000 pieces, making these quite scarce. They were immediately distributed to militia regiments just about as fast as they could be made. This saber has a long, curved blade, measuring 34 inches in length, 1-3/8 in width, and over ¼ inch in black thickness. It is tipped off with a clip point. The knuckle guard is a simple iron strap. The guard is marked “P”. The ricasso is marked “P/HHP/N. STARR”. “HHP” are the initials of the government inspector Henry H. Perkins. The scabbard is made of iron and was black japanned. The overall condition is good to very good. The blade is nice and bright with clear markings. The iron hilt is dark with age. The scabbard bears a significant amount of the original black japan. Here is a great example of a scarce American blade! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
