Rare 1850 Officer’s Sword w TELESCOPING SCABBARD
Etched Officer’s Civil War Sword Imported from Europe
Here we present an antique 1850 Officer’s Sword and Collapsible Scabbard, made circa 1861 in Paris, France. This blade is beautifully etched with patriotic American symbolism on both sides. The grip is rayskin with braided wire wrap. The scabbard is marked “JAY & Cie/BREVETES A PARIS”, and has two distinct segments, one which telescopes into the other. This type of scabbard is very rare, but several are known to have been carried into the American Civil War. Both sides were short on military arms when the war began, so both the Union and the Confederacy imported arms from Europe.
The overall condition is very good. The etching is still clear. The metal surfaces have a mild gray patina. The rayskin grip is about 80%. The wire wrap has been repaired toward the guard. The markings on the scabbard are clear.
