BEAUTIFUL Civil War US 1840 MEDICAL STAFF Sword
Made in Europe & Imported by Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia
Here we present an antique US Model 1840 Medical Staff Sword, made circa 1861 in Europe, very likely Prussia, then imported by Hortsmann & Sons of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These swords were mandated by military regulation for dress and ceremonial purposes, and purchased privately by medical personnel from military retailers. The gorgeously cast hilt is made of solid brass. The shapely handle features an eagle in an oval. The cross guard is feathered in appearance. The shield-shaped langet on the front has the silver letters “MS” mounted into it. The blade is beautifully acid etched in a floral design that extends about 2/3 up the blade on each side. One side features a long oval in which is etched in nice script “United States Medical Staff”. The ricasso is marked “W.H./Horstmann/& Sons/PHILADELPHIA”. The scabbard is also of solid brass, and is also well-appointed with decorative features like stars, vines, flowers and oak leaves.
The overall condition is fine. The brass and iron surfaces bear a rich, aged patina. The etchings are clear. The markings are legible. This is one beautiful & rare Civil War sword that would fit perfectly into a collection having to do with this war itself or with the medical profession!
