Description:
This is a really neat M1 Garand variation commonly called a "Tanker". It was built by Federal Ordnance out of original G.I. M1 Garand parts and sold commercially. It entailed cutting down the barrel, stock, and gas system parts to make the barrel 18 inches long, and rechambering the barrel for the 7.62 Nato/.308 Winchester cartridge. The result is a very cool looking carbine length Garand with less recoil than the original 30-06 chambering. While some of these Tankers were built at home by shade tree gunsmiths after WW2 with surplus Garands, this Tanker was professionally assembled by a company who perfected doing the alterations. All of the parts appear to be G.I. and the receiver is not a reweld. The parkerizing is in excellent shape with no visible wear. The bore is excellent in this Garand with 4 grooves in the rifling, appearing sharp. The stock is very attractive and you can still make out the "circle P" on the pistol grip. It is free from cracks or repairs. The handguard is an altered M1A handguard cut down to fit this Tanker. The sights are both standard G.I. originals with the rear being the lock-bar type. As you can see in the pictures, Federal Ordnance stamped the left side of the receiver with their name and the caliber designation "7.62 Nato". If you have been looking for a Tanker M1 Garand to add to your collection, it would be hard to find a nicer one than this!
