1 of 1,286 Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 Frontier .44-40’s with serial number 3XX*. Considered one of the finest single action revolvers of its era, The New Model No. 3 was introduced in 1885 & mfg. until 1908, with a total production of 2,072 revolvers of which 786 were converted to the .44 Russian for export to Japan. Thus leaving the total number of guns produced in the 44-40 caliber to 1,286. Features standard markings with 6 ½” bbl., blue finish, fitted with original checkered black hard rubber grips which are numbered to the revolver. S&W Factory Letter confirms current configuration matches original configuration when shipped as 1 of 5 on May 13, 1891 to Hibbard, Spenser, Bartlett & Co., Chicago, IL. The star next to the serial number indicates this revolver was factory refinished & stamped with the month & date (August 1949) underneath the left grip panel on the frame. The backstrap is inscribed in cursive script with the first initial J, L or T. Second initial and last name are very legible. Reads J. W. Doherty, L. W. Doherty or T. W. Doherty. Our research continues with several possible individuals identified. Overall very good condition as factory refinished in 1949, with some surface rust on cylinder, small crack on bottom right grip & top left grip. Mechanically excellent. Fine example of The New Model No. 3 Frontier that would make a great addition to any collection.
