The 19 3/4" damascus barrels have fully rifled bores that are in excellent condition and the barrels have almost all the brown finish (probably redone years ago). The pull on the very fine condition stock is 14 3/8" and has a cheekpiece. The grip cap is Gold inlayed and of steel, as is the buttplate. The barrels have three sights, 100, 150 and 200 yards. The excellent condition forend uses a cross pin and the locks are non-rebounding. The action is a Jones underlever and locks up as new. The rifle appears to be little used. About 95% of the Gold inlays remain. This was the most prized rifle of the late gun dealer Thad Scott. In almost 50 years of collecting English black powder double rifles I have only seen two other Howdah double rifles. They are much more scarce than Howdah pistols! I had a Master Engraver from the Firearms Engravers Guild of America look at the rifle and he said he wouldn't even guess what it would cost to reproduce the engraving but it would be many thousands! He charges $100.00 per inch for Gold inlay lines, let alone the intricate scroll work! Weight is about 9 pounds. Cased in a period Mahogany brass cornered case with period correct bullet mold, powder measure, capper/decapper and chamber brush. The tools have FAUX Ivory handles. There is also a Gold plated screw driver. In Cal Pappas's British Bore Rifles there is an exact duplicate of this rifle in it's original case with tools in the 16 Bore section. That rifle is located in Alaska. SOLD |
