Antique BRASS TACKED Springfield 1884 45-70 GOVT
Indian War-era US Military Rifle Made 1891
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1886 by Springfield Armory. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War in 1898. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. They were sturdy, simple rifles, with plenty of range and power.
This specimen is marked “Eagle/U.S./Springfield” on the lock. The barrel is marked with “V/P/Eagle head” proof marks. The breech block is marked “U.S./Model/1884”. The left side of the stock bears the government inspector cartouche “SWP/1891” for Samuel W. Porter. The rear of the stock is also marked with “47/233” on the right side and “23/K/233” on the top. This latter marking likely follows a “Regiment/Company/Rack Number” format. The top of the wrist is marked “147”. This rifle has been shortened to a convenient length and decorated with brass tacks which have been arranged in peculiar designs representing the sun, moon, stars, birds, etc. The front sight has been modified, and the long range rear sight removed, so that the notch on the breech hinge is the effective rear sight.
The condition is very good. The metal is dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is solid and smooth. The bore is in very good condition. The action is excellent. Here is a very interesting rifle for you collection!
