“DOVITIIS” 71/94 Uruguayan Contract MAUSER Rifle
Scarce Antique Military Rifle with German & French Influences
Here we present a scarce antique Uruguayan Contract Mauser Model 71/94 Rifle, originally made in 1883 in Germany, then converted to 6.5x53.5mm Rimmed (also known as 6.5 Daudeteau) at the arsenal at St. Denis in France, circa 1894. This was done to update the rifle to more modern military philosophy of small caliber, higher velocity projectiles. After the conversion, France sold these rifles to Uruguay via a merchant tailor by the name of Dovitiis. Not many of these were purchased before Uruguay adopted something entirely different, probably due to the fact that it was still a single shot rifle and that ammunition they were sold had hard primers.
The rifle is marked “J.G. M/71” and bears Gothic Prussian proof marks. The receiver is also dated “1883”, the original manufacture date. The chamber is marked in fancy script with the signature of the French arsenal at St. Denis, which made the caliber conversion.
The overall condition is very good plus. The steel parts are nicely blued. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match on the receiver and all the bolt parts. The stock is in good shape. The bore is clean with strong rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice and scarce Mauser for your collection!
