Description: SOLD...Antique 1892 Winchester 1st year production 44-40 octagon barrel rifle. Here is a very nice 1st year production 1892 Winchester. S/N 14785 and made in 1892. Has the standard 24” octagon barrel and in the very sought after 44-40 caliber. The bore is very good with strong rifling and just the normal black powder roughness but no big pits or craters and no rings or bulges. I have had this gun in my personal collection since 2007 and it has been a great shooter. The mechanics are like new and it feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. Both hammer notches and trigger sear are perfect. Still has the original front and rear sights. The markings are all excellent. All the screw heads are sharp and looks like never been turned or messed with. The metal a a very smooth medium brown patina with no pitting anywhere and never cleaned on or messed with. The wood is real nice. The forearm fits tight and full to the metal with NO splits, cracks, chips or repairs of any kind. Just a few very minor handling dings and that is it. The butt stock looks to have had a repair around the upper tang area on both sides but VERY well done. The only thing that you can tell is the grain is missing in this area and this tells me something has been done but it looks very good and is solid as a rock. Still fits very good to the metal as you can see and has no other splits or cracks but a small worn chip on the right side {see photo} but it is still very nice looking. Just something that this ole 92 has been through over the years but a very pleasing looking rifle in deed. Still has the early “heart” shaped hammer spur knurling. Looks like a very small amount of brass has been added to the top face of the hammer from wear from the bolt pushing it back but it works perfectly even when you run the cocking lever very slow. It was like this when I bought it 10 years ago and it has never failed me. It could be very easily repaired with weld if so desired as I have fixed many of these 92's with this same problem but I would just leave it as it is. I would have repaired it long ago if I was worried about it. I think I have room for one more photo so I will try to get a picture of the hammer soon or I can e-mail you any photos you might want to see. This is about all I can say about this ole 92. It is what it is and I really hate to see it go but I have bought a few that have lots of finish that I want to keep and I just can not keep them all. If it had better butt stock and was perfect it would be priced higher as these antique 92's are getting VERY hard to find and getting a 1st year gun is getting tough to find that is not completely worn out. This a very nice looking early 92 in the perfect configuration.. I have it priced accordingly per condition and what I see these selling at actions that dealers are paying so I know it is priced right !!! $50 insured shipping.
