Description:
A beautiful Stevens “Ideal” No.44 with a 26” barrel chambered in 22 l.r., sporting a J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. No. 475 scope. Barrel finish is 98%+ original blue, and has excellent sharp rifling. The receiver is full brilliant original case color with just the slightest wear on the sharp edges, with the lever and butt plate exhibiting generous amount of color. All of the roll markings, both on the barrel and receiver are sharp and crisp indicating that the rifle metal has not been refinished. Same goes for the factory scope. The screws are in very nice condition with the takedown screw showing some deformation. Both the fore end and butt stock are in excellent condition with what appears to be a varnish finish even though catalogue descriptions indicate an oil finish. The single trigger has a very crisp let off on and the lever is very tight with no play.
When 1st shooting this rifle I noticed it was hitting a bit off; upon closer examination I discovered that the front scope base was tapped approx. 4 degrees off. Whether this was done at the factory or afterwards is not known but still needed to be corrected.
I contacted Steve Earle and ordered a custom front base to be made to compensate for the error. While I was at it I also ordered extra bases to accommodate a Lyman Target scope. The Lyman front base also compensates for the error. The extra Lyman bases and the original Stevens front base are included.
