-My personal Springfield-" Indian altered" Rifle... I purchased this decades ago at Plentywood Mercantile-Plentywood,Montana close to the Fort Peck Reservation."ASS HOLE" was a lacotah Sioux associated with its history..and was known by that name among the tribe etc....hence my purchase mainly because of that name associated with it.... This is a 2nd Allin Conversion from C'war 58 cal. musket to the 50-70 self contained Cartridge. This rifle (unserialed-undocumented) was apparently turned in to the US Military by.."ASS-HOLE" the "Lacotah" name he was known and recorded by.. It is strongly believed this particuler Springfield was to have been used in conflicts where it was captured/stolen by the Lacotah -BEFORE the LBH(Little Big Horn-Custer)---.The U.S.gov't retains ALL the records...! It is definitely a 'plains Indian weapon"..the photos bear this specimen out. The barrel is 26in. long and has a beautifully rifled bore..obviously not overly used & well cared for...the metalwork is NOT pitted and NO factory finish remains...yet the action is tight and complete..This specimen shows the Butt and Barrel are heavy leather wrapped...most likely it had at one time a deerskin beaded Sleeve to carry it in.
