Description:
Original Civil War Spencer Model 1860 Army Rifle, serial number range 33XXX puts the rifle in the 2nd contract ordered by the U.S. government during the Civil War. In original 52 Spencer with 6-groove rifled bore with original 7 shot tube fed magazine, 30” round barrel on full length walnut stock secured with 3 barrel bands, brass blade front sight & military ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards. Crisp markings throughout with visible Spencer address & patent date on top of breech with two visible cartouches on left side of stock. Top right screw on left side of frame has been replaced with a pin & looks to be an older replacement, remaining functional. Rear sling swivel has been plugged. Very good condition with metal showing a smooth clean patina. Stock shows typical use marks throughout with many unidentified markings. Mechanically excellent with crisp action & strong bore. This rifle is one of 11,470 delivered starting in 1863-1865 making it much rarer than the carbine version also used during the conflict. Both rifles & carbines saw heavy action during the war playing a vital role in many decisive battles. The Spencer 1860’s were truly ahead of their time & continued to play an important role moving into the Indian War era. Overall a far above average Civil War icon that will make a great addition to any collection.
