Description:
Up for sale is a very nice example of a 1st Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine chambered in 44-40 caliber.  It has all the early 1st model features including:
  • swept back lever
  • screw-in lever latch
  •  mortised checkered thumbprint dustcover
  • early style folding rear leaf sight and early style pinched front band sight
  • screw-in magazine tube cap

It is a standard carbine 20" round barrel, full magazine, saddle ring, and early carbine style butt plate with sliding trapdoor.  Serial number is 3,261 which places its date of manufacture in 1874.

Overall metal finish has turned to a smooth brown patina.  Surprisingly, the bore condition is very good; I would conservatively rate it as a 6 to 7 out of 10.  Rifling is pronounced and based on my examination, there is minor evidence of pitting.  This is impressive for a 143-year old rifle.  The upper tang is marked 1873 and there is no provision for a tang mounted sight, which is correct for the earliest Model 1873 Carbine.  Barrel, tang, and serial number markings are crisp and legible.

The wood condition appears to be original and shows wear to reflect its age and use.  There are numerous dings, dents, chips, and gouges. There is a very faint hairline crack off the left side of the rear tang; there is no separation, it is stable and appears to be very old. At some point, the proud owner carved his or her initials (RJR) on the left side of the stock.

In my professional opinion there are four screws that may have been replaced since their patina is not the same as those that appear to be original.  Mechanically the gun was well cared for, is solid, and everything functions as it should.

I’ve ensured that the pictures clearly show each of the imperfections.

In summary, this is a very nice antique Winchester.  It would make a great addition to anyone’s collection.  If only it could talk.

Thanks for looking.  I will be more than happy to provide additional pictures, if necessary.
