“U.S.N.” MARKED Antique COLT 1851 NAVY Revolver
Only 2,000 So Marked, Made in 1856
Here we present an antique Colt 1851 Percussion Navy, made in 1856 in Hartford, Connecticut. Samuel Colt gained an enormous client when the US Army adopted his Model 1860 Army Revolver, but he struggled fruitlessly to get his 1851 Navy Revolver to be adopted by the US Navy. Only 2,000 1851 Navies were purchased by the US Navy. This one is correctly marked “U.S.” under “COLT’S/PATENT” on the left side of the frame, and “U.S.N.” on the bottom of the grip frame. This revolver’s serial number also coincides with the range of those known to have been purchased by the US government: 55500 to 62000.
The top of the barrel is marked “—ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY—”.
The overall condition is good. The gun has been refinished in nickel. The markings on the top of the barrel are a bit shy, as is the “U.S.N” marking on the grip strap, indicating that these were polished during the refinish process. The serial numbers have been re-stamped and all numbers match. Wedge is unnumbered. The grips are also refinished. The bore has strong rifling. The action is excellent.
