Description:
An especially interesting Winchester model 1895 Sporting Rifle with special order features - cheekpiece stock, shotgun butt, sling swivels, and Lyman sights designed for Win. 95. The rifle also has a period offset mounted Stevens telescopic sight.

The rifle is caliber .30-40 US (Krag) with 28” barrel. The serial number, early two piece magazine, and frame markings indicate 1901 production. The telescopic sight is marked, “J.Stevens  Arms & Tool Co., Chicopee, Ma., Pats, pend.” there is no model number on the scope. The J. Stevens Co. began marking their telescopic sights in this manner in 1901. Lack of a model number and date of patent indicates this is one of the first scopes of its type. It appears to be a four power instrument. Scope sights for Winchester lever action rifles had to be fitted to the rifle with offset mounts since they ejected fired cartridge cases from the top of their actions. The smokeless powder high velocity long range .30-40 US cartridge lent itself to use with a telescopic sight. The cheekpiece buttstock on this rifle appears to be an original Winchester stock with Winchester hard rubber shotgun type buttplate. Considering this rifle’s offset scope the cheekpiece is a definite advantage when using the scope.
The telescope sight can be easily dismounted (as shown in our pictures) so that the rifle can be used with its Lyman receiver sight. The rear scope mount is incorporated with the Lyman receiver sight and scope elevation is controlled by the Lyman elevation scale and side lock. Considering early telescope sight’s limitations in field of view and light gathering capabilities the option of using either open or telescopic sights on the same rifle was a very practical idea. This rare and interesting Winchester 1895 rifle was most likely designed/built for a very experienced and progressive sportsman of the period.

CONDITION: This rifle is in excellent original condition. The twins 99% original strong blued finish. The bore and mechanical functions are excellent The receiver retains 97%+ strong original blued finish. The color casehardened hammer and trigger plate retain 98% original finish. The Lyman sight retains 99% original blue and the Stevens scope and mounts are in similar condition with a slight bit of storage rust on the forward left end of the scope tube and front locking ring. The scope is in excellent optical condition with cross hairs and proper long eye relief. The stocks are in excellent original condition with nearly all their original factory finish with a few light handling marks.

A rare and most interesting special order very high condition early Winchester 1895 rifle which would be most difficult to duplicate or upgrade.
