Description:
The Civil War and the Firearms Trade, 2nd Edition traces the growth of America’s firearms industry, in the periods before, during and just after the Civil War.  First run of the 2nd Edition is now available.

The journey begins with a review of the inventions that contributed to the growth in communications, agriculture, transportation, and firearms production from 1812 through 1860. This same period experienced constantly worsening political and social hostilities that would ultimately cause America to go to war … with itself.

Serious threats were also posed by the European powers concerning their possible intervention in the Civil War. A new chapter reviews these threats and an unlikely alliance, in addition to the foreign firearms that would find their way to America’s battle fields.

Both the North and the South were ill prepared for the scope and duration of the hostilities that were to come.  Long guns, handguns, carbines, revolving rifles, machine guns, field artillery, grenades, landmines and hot air balloons domestically and foreign sourced – that were used by the North and the South are reviewed.

A new chapter on the Sharpshooters, of the North and South, reviews both their weapons and contributions.

The groundbreaking patents of Sam Colt, Rollin White and S&W are examined, along with their impact on Northern firearm production.

Cartridges of the period are also examined, from the plain paper and combustible through to the new self-contained metallic cartridges. Separate-primed, Flobert, Pinfire, Rimfire, Teatfire, Cupfire, Cupfire Annular Ring metallic cartridges are addressed.

The new metallic cartridge handguns that entered the marketplace between 1855 and the late 1860’s are reviewed: Allen & Wheelock, Bacon Arms Company, Belgium and French Pinfire Companies, Colt, Moore, Pond, Prescott, Remington and S&W.

The tremendous growth and impact of America’s newsprint industry is addressed in Chapter 9. Over 1200 actual weekly newspapers from the period were examined yielding original examples (from the North and South) and actual firearm advertisements.

Chapter 10 is a review of the circumstances that gave rise to the new centerfire cartridges, along with the new handguns designed to use this new cartridge.

The final chapter will recount the significant challenges facing America in the aftermath of the Civil War. The review addresses the efforts to reconcile differences between the North and the South, the circumstances that led to the Democrats reclaiming the South, and the impact the cessation of hostilities had on the firearms industry.

The Civil War and the Firearms Trade, 2nd Edition examines more than 200 different weapons employed by the Northern and Southern forces, many with multiple pictures and all but a very few in color.

Finally, an extensive References Section is provided, which should prove valuable to collectors, researchers, writers and students of firearms history.

The author hopes the reader enjoys the journey through this most creative and tumultuous period of America’s firearms history.

The Civil War and the Firearms Trade, 2nd Edition is being offered at an introductory price of $49.95 (List: $69.95) plus $3.75 shipping.

Reviews:
"If a review of the Table of Contents doesn't make you want this book, the Index of Firearms surely will. Great book." M. Embree, Gunsmith

"This book is a must have for any collector or student of Civil War weaponry with its  200+ pictures of well researched and documented firearms. Many of these firearms are very rare and will not be found in any other book." S. Dahl, President, New England Ballistic Services

"King uses the period between the early 1800's through the 1870's to trace the evolution of America's firearms industry. The historical context, including the period's social, moral, economic and political issues, makes this book so much more than just a firearms book." J. Costa, Historian
