Description:
Purchased from the Old Fort Sumner (Billy The Kid) Museum in New Mexico several years ago when it closed.  I am offering it as-is at a very attractive price, so that you can do the restoration.

This gun was never converted to centerfire, and the chamber remains in the original 44 Rimfire.  The buttstock and buttplate are of the correct type.  The two-line barrel address is not worn off as many are, but is 100% bold and readable!  The bore, although rusty, should clean up with strong lands and grooves.  There is no bulged place in this barrel.  The lower tang was not broken off from the frame, as so many have been.  The gate is not missing, which is an impossible part to find.

I would venture to guess that many of the “affordable” Win 1866’s offered in this forum have (1) 44-40 barrels as taken from a Win 1873, (2) chambers are accordingly larger than a 44 rimfire, (3) buttstocks robbed from a Win 1873 (and they are noticeably very different in contour), (4) a broken tang as welded by a neophyte (and looking awful!), (5) missing or incorrect gate, (6) address partly or entirely worn off, and (7) elevator as made from a modified 1873 part.  Let the buyers beware!

The serial number 160873 indicates manufactured in 1883.  The Winchester records at Cody, Wyoming should be able to provide more details on this carbine.

The buttstock is missing some wood on both sides of the upper and lower tangs, and this can be skillfully spliced in.  The wood is dark walnut.

A number of parts were missing when this carbine was purchased.  Parts missing from this gun include the links, ejector, saddle ring/staple, lever latch, some small springs, misc screws, and rear sight.  Also missing are the mag tube end plug, coil spring, and follower.

I have recently purchased a rimfire striker, and it is screwed onto the firing pin (not pictured).  Also not pictured is the fact that I have removed the sideplate screw, so the sideplates are now loose.  I have also purchased some replacement screws and springs.

Being made well prior to 1899, I can ship this carbine directly to the buyer.  No FFL required, unless your State has exceeded normal Federal guidelines (and I won’t sell to those).
