ID’ed Antique NY Pioneer’s Half-Stock Long Rifle
Marked “Amos Hadden” & Dated “1835”
Here we present an antique Half Stock Percussion Rifle, made circa the 1830s in the Northeastern United States, probably New York or Pennsylvania.
This .41 caliber rifle has the name “Amos Hadden” carved into the left side of the buttstock. Research shows that Amos Hadden was originally from Oswego County, New York, before moving West to the then Northwest Territory. He was one of the first settlers to purchase land from the U.S. government in what is now Calhoun County, Michigan, in 1835, two years prior to Michigan’s statehood. The township that he specifically settled in was called Rice Creek. In fact, the top of this rifle’s barrel is stamped with the date “1835”, the same year he arrived at Rice Creek. The lock is marked “J. BISHOP/WARRANTED”. Bishop was a lock maker from about 1775 on, and had his shop out of eastern Pennsylvania. The bottom of the barrel is marked “REMINGTON”. This is one of the original barrels that was made by Eliphalet Remington II, prior to the founding of Remington Arms Company. According to Flayderman, “Eliphalet II is said to have started making barrels at his father’s forge near the modern village of Ilion, N.Y. to supply the busy gun trade in the central New York area.”
The overall condition of this rifle is very good. The iron parts are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock has seen some hard use and light repair, but is solid. The bore is sharply rifled and very nice. The action is strong.
