Payment Types Accepted: Cash, Check, PayPal Description: Offered here is a circa 1830 J & S Hawken full-stock rifle.  This rifle is a forerunner of the famed Hawken plains rifles of the 1850s.  The rifle has a walnut stock, which is common on the earlier Hawken rifles.  The barrel is 40" swamped, and has a .530 diameter bore with 7-grooved rifling. Several design features exhibited on this piece form the basis for the more refined details of the later plains rifles.  These include: long tang tapered lock panels, wider in the front crescent butt plate--two piece iron scroll trigger guard set triggers rudimentary beaver tail cheek piece The rifle shows minimal use after its conversion from flint to percussion.  The lock plate was polished as part of the removal of the pan, and shows little pitting.  Likewise, the stock has almost no percussion cap erosion.  Poor storage condition, not usage, has caused a heavy pattern of corrosion the full length of the barrel exterior.  The pattern is reminiscent of corrosion of the softer iron skelp of a hand-forged barrel.
