RARE Antique WHITNEY KENNEDY Lever Action Rifle
Heavy Frame in Short-Lived & Desirable .40-60
Here we present an antique Whitney Kennedy Lever Action Heavy Frame Rifle, made circa the early 1880s in New Haven, Connecticut. The Whitney Kennedy was the next iteration of the Whitney Burgess Rifle. Total production was only about 15,000 of all variants from 1879-1886 according to Flayderman. This example represents the large and heavy frame version, chambered for the .40-60 cartridge. It was made especially for big game hunting and went directly head to head with the Winchester Model 1876.
The top of the barrel is marked “40-60” and “WHITNEY KENNEDY MF’D BY/WHITNEY ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN USA”. Patent dates are located on the top of the receiver tang. The serial number is K539. The fore end cap and butt plate are of iron. Front sight is a windage adjustable blade and the rear is windage and elevation adjustable buckhorn.
The iron is dark with age, with most of the markings legible. The walnut butt stock is dark, with some minor dings from use and a little chipping around the tang, otherwise solid. The fore end has been lost, but the fore end cap remains with the rifle. The bore is clean and shiny with good rifling. The action is not functional, but could like be gotten up and running again.
