Description:

FINE Antique COLT Model 1877 LIGHTNING Revolver

With “Deadwood” Inscription on the Grips

Here we present an antique Colt 1877 Lightning Double Action Revolver, made in 1891. The Model 1877 was Colt’s first venture into double action revolvers, with the Model 1878 following close on its heels. The US military stuck with the Single Action Army for quite some time to come, but the public made these revolvers a success. One famous user, outlaw William “Billy the Kid” Bonney was carrying one when he was shot and killed by Pat Garrett.

The barrel is marked “COLT D.A. 38” on the left side. It is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.” Patent dates of 1871, 74 and 75 are located on the left side of the frame. The hard rubber grips bear the iconic rampant colt. The grips are also hand inscribed “Deadwood” on the exterior grip panel, “TGASE” on the inside. Something like “Lamely SDJ” is inscribed on the exterior of the right panel. The “Deadwood” inscription is most likely referring to the infamous South Dakota town that popped up in the 1870s. It was the quintessential boom town, known for its gambling, prostitution, murder, and especially the murder of “Wild Bill” Hickok.

Overall condition is fine. The original nickel finish is 90%. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The hard rubber grips show some smoothing to the checkering due to wear. The bore is very nice, with clean surfaces and sharp rifling. The action is excellent. Here is an interesting and very nice Colt Lightning!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Compare to $2000!
