FINE Antique ALLEN & THURBER Pepperbox Revolver
Nicely Engraved with Bone Grips
Here we present and antique Allen & Thurber Bar Hammer Percussion Pepperbox Revolver, made circa 1847 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Ethan Allen’s double action pepperbox was America’s first revolver, enjoying widespread use and popularity that Samuel Colt would soon approach. The history of these handguns is as diverse as the people who carried them. From the Seminole Wars, the Gold Rush, Mexican-American War and the American Civil War, they saw action on a large scale and probably even more still at the individual level. Here is an all-American revolver that presaged the impact Colt would make.
This specimen is a convenient size for the average citizen, and would likely have been worn on the belt. It features 6 shots of .32 caliber ball, which was superior firepower for the time. The frame and nipple shield are nicely engraved. The grips are made of polished bone.
The barrel is marked “ALLEN & THURBER” and “WORCESTER”. Then “PATENTED 1837” and “CAST STEEL”. The hammer is marked “ALLEN’S PATENT”.
The overall condition is fine. About 65% of the original blue finish remains, turning a deep brown with age. The engraving and markings are clear and legible. The numbers match on all parts. The grips are in fine condition. The bores are smooth and clean. The action is excellent. Examples of Allen’s Pepperbox are quite scarce in this kind of condition and with bone grips.
