Description:

MASSIVE Swiss SHARPSHOOTER Rifle of Kanton Luzern

Circa 1831 Schuetzen Style Large Bore Military Rifle

Here we present an antique Swiss Berner Stutzer, also known as the Fischer Stutzer, made circa 1831. The total number produced remains a mystery, but it is known that at least 50 were made for trials in that year. The rifle was designed by a career Swiss soldier by the name of Karl-Ferdinand Fischer, then a Major in the Bernese sniper rifle corps. The actual concept rifle was built by fellow rifleman Christian Schenk in 1826. It is historically significant as Switzerland’s first attempt at undertaking a standardized percussion weapon with interchangeable parts, this when Switzerland was still primarily governed and militarized at the cantonal level, instead of federally. It is also significant that the percussion firing system was not in widespread use yet, much less by militaries until the 1840s. Joseph Egg, another Swiss, was the inventor of the percussion firing system in about 1817. It is quite likely that this rifle was called into action in the brief but decisive Sonderbund War in 1847, which pitted the Catholics against the Protestants in an effort to maintain more local cantonal governance, versus more federal governance. The war lasted only a few weeks in November of that year, with minimal casualties, and a federalist victory.

This rifle features a very heavy round barrel with a large bore to match. The bore contains micro-groove rifling. The rear sight is elevation adjustable, ranged out to 800 paces. The front sight is a windage adjustable blade. The trigger is double set for the most precision. The overall profile is like that of a Schuetzen rifle, rifles meant for extreme accuracy over long ranges. The butt stock is large, with a steady drop at the comb. The butt plate is designed to lock in under the arm for a more secure hold for off-hand shooting. The butt plate is iron while the trigger guard is in handsome brass. Both the barrel and the bayonet socket—yes, this heavy percussion sniper has a bayonet socket—are numbered 287. The breech end of the barrel is marked “K Shield L” for the Swiss Kanton of Luzern. The left side of the barrel is marked with a Liege proof and “L”, having been made in Belgium on contract, and likely assembled in Switzerland. Liege has long been a premiere firearms making center of the world. The initials “AR” and a stylized monogram are located under the barrel. Another of these original rifles is located at the Musée d`Art et d`Histoire in Geneva.

The overall condition is near fine. This is the epitome of a sturdy Swiss military rifle, heavy and overbuilt. The iron parts are evenly patinated with clear markings. The stock is in very good condition. The bore is micro-groove rifled, with sharp rifling and a clean bore. The action is strong.
