CIVIL WAR Antique Spencer Cavalry Carbine

Saddle Ring Carbine with Curious Markings

Here we present an antique Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. Saddle Ring Cavalry Carbine, made circa 1864 in Boston, Massachusetts. These lever operated, breech-loading rifles were marvels of the time and had an impact on how war was to be fought in the future. Though their service life in the U.S. military was relatively short, the Spencer story includes Christopher Spencer, the inventor of the rifle, demonstrating and shooting with President Abraham Lincoln, who gave his full endorsement of the piece. Supposedly, during the Battle at Gettysburg, a captured Rebel said one could “load in the morning and fire all day!” This was due to the Spencer’s most endearing quality: a 7 round magazine tube in the butt of the gun. This gave the shooter phenomenal firepower in a day when most soldiers were muzzle-loading single shots or even singly loading their breech-loading carbines.

The top of the frame is marked “SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS./PAT’D MARCH 6 1860”. There are various single letter government inspector marks throughout.

This carbine also has some non-factory markings on it that make it interesting. First is the “CN” marking on the right side of the hammer. Another is a finely hand-scratched “A.D. 1900” at the foremost part of the wrist. Finally, in the same handwriting, appears to be the name “J.H. WUHL”. It may surprise some that this handy carbine was not completely obsolete by 1900. After all, it held 7 shots of potent .50 caliber ammunition. In fact, commercially loaded ammunition was indeed available through about 1920. It would be a fascinating task to identify the markings on this gun, and add that piece of information to this carbine’s already rich history.

This specimen is in very good condition. The frame bears faint case colors, while those on the breech block are vibrant. There is a small amount of original blue toward the muzzle, with a brown patina making up the balance. The markings are mostly clear and legible. The walnut stock is very nice. The bore is sharp and clean. The action is strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches in length.
