Description:

HEAVY Barreled .40 HENRY PARKER Flintlock Rifle

With Protective “False Muzzle” & Double Set Triggers

Here we present an antique Heavy Barreled Flintlock Rifle with a Henry Parker marked lock, made circa 1820.

The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:

“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.

Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”

This .40 caliber rifle features an engraved lock marked “HENRY PARKER/WARRANTED” in distinctive Gothic lettering. The rear of the lock depicts two game-birds. The octagonal barrel is quite long and heavy. The bore is sleeved and protected by a “false muzzle”. The idea of the false muzzle was to keep the edges of the crown sharp for best accuracy, as the muzzle was prone to much wear from using ramrods to push a ball down to the breech. It is uncommon to find rifles equipped with this false muzzle feature, and in many cases, they have been lost over the course of 160+ years. It is a scarce thing indeed to find one intact. The front sight is a blade and the rear sight a notch. This rifle also comes equipped with a double set trigger. This example is quite heavy and would be difficult to shoot off-hand. It would be best suited for rested, long-range precision shooting.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts are dark with age. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is in good condition, though there is a 7 inch long split under the barrel in the ramrod channel. The bore is sharp. There is no half-cock notch and the action is strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 43-1/2 inches in length without muzzle protector and 45 inches with it.
