Description:

CASED Pair FRENCH Antique Percussion BELT Pistols

Maker’s Marked “AREEN” w Horn Tipped Carved Stocks

Here we present an antique Pair of French Percussion Belt Pistols, made circa the late 18th Century as flintlock, then converted to percussion in the first half of the 19th Century. The lock of each pistol is marked by the maker “J. AREEN”. These would have been intended to be worn on the belt, perhaps by an officer in the military.

These pistols are each .54 caliber with 9-11/32 barrels that begin as octagonal, transitioning to round about the mid-point. The front sights are an oblong blade, and the rear sights are notches on the barrel tangs. Both pistols feature horn tips on the ramrods and stock forends. Stocks are carved on top and beneath the pistols. Brass hardware is engraved and sculpted on the pommels, side plates, and trigger guards. Ramrod holders are also brass. The conversions were very well-done. One pistol has a plain trigger, while the other has a double set trigger, enabling a must crisper trigger pull for an aimed shot.

The case is a glass-topped, custom made case in oak with a red velvet cushion.

The overall condition for each pistol is fine. The iron parts bear a rich plum-colored patina. The brass is dark with age. The markings are legible. The carved stocks are very nice and solid. The bores are smooth and fine. The actions are excellent and strong. Here is an excellent example of an original pair of pistols that have been together since flintlocks ruled the day, were updated to percussion and kept together for us today.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 9-11/32 inches.
