Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are absolutely proud to offer this fine example of the Rolls Royce of lever actions, the Bullard repeating rifle. This one is decked out in deluxe form, with highly figured walnut with checkering and a pistol grip. Now, it is good to find a Bullard in any condition, but this one is very good. The wood is intact, with a rich reddish brown color. The checkering is relatively deep and sharp. The blue is a mottled variation of deep blue, silvered edges, and patina. The bore of the heavy 28 inch barrel is good for the black powder era, with a fair amount of shine and strong rifling. The rear sight is a correct Winchester 1876 ladder sight, graduated out to 1000 yards. She is chambered in 45-85-290, but the Bullard book states that she will also fire standard 45-70 loads at appropriate pressures. The butt plate, bearing the maker's name and elk symbol, is also very good. This rifle bears serial number 777, and is about a midrange gun. Bullard rifles have more variations and changes than others makes, and the book covers each of them in great detail. This gun has such features as the scooped loading port, small print address, factory hole for changing the extractor, 7 screw receiver, and caliber mark on the receiver. I looked up every large frame Bullard that I could find that sold in the last 2 years, and all the other sellers were stymied by the hole in the left side of the receiver. Most cropped it out, hiding what they thought was a flaw. Two honest sellers pointed it out like it was a huge scratch. If they all knew what they were selling, they would know that it is perfectly normal. Without this hole, replacing a broken extractor meant taking apart the action and removing the bolt. That could ruin a hunt in 1885. I included a photo that shows how the hole lines up with the extractor retaining pin. Large frame guns were serialized from 1 to 1500, then 2500 to 2700. Later guns were marked "model 1886" on the right side of the receiver. The action is silky smooth, thanks to the rack and pinion style mechanism designed by J.H. Bullard. They were only produced from 1883 to 1889, since they failed to compete with Winchester and Marlin. These great guns were hand fitted, causing them to be more expensive than other lever actions. Today, they are highly sought after for the same reasons. They load from the bottom, and the action locks the bolt forward much like a rolling block. Once you work that smooth lever, you will be hooked. It also doesn't hurt that this rifle is about a twin with an engraved one given to William F. Cody, last valued at 135,000 dollars. Other deluxe guns are typically priced from 10 to 15 thousand, but I will start this one for much less. If you have been looking for the right Bullard to collect or for investment, but want the added clout of a deluxe gun, or, you just like the lucky sevens, then look no further.
