Description:

JAPANESE Murata Type 18 Infantry Rifle

Used During the Russo-Japanese War

Here we present a Japanese Murata Type 18 Infantry Rifle, made circa 1885. This rifle was an upgrade to Japan’s first indigenously designed and manufactured military rifle, the Murata Type 13. This rifle would have seen use in the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) and the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). This is a single shot bolt action rifle, which was soon to be followed by the Type 22, Japan’s first domestic repeating rifle. About 80,000 were manufactured, beginning in 1885, picking up where the previous model left off: around 70,000. Here is an early Type 18 rifle.

The serial numbers on this gun are in Arabic numerals, while all other markings are in Japanese. Those on the left side of the receiver translate to “Empire of Greater Japan, Murata rifle” and “Tokyo Artillery Arsenal Rifle Factory”. A chrysanthemum used to be visible on top of the receiver, denoting property of the Emperor, though it was removed when the gun was taken out of service. The mark that is still visible on top of the receiver means “obsolete”. There is a faint circular mark on the left rear part of the butt stock that also denotes its place of manufacture. Deep Japanese characters are present on the right side of the stock.

Overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match, except the bolt. The stock is solid and shows some wear. There a hairline crack at the wrist that is stable. There is yellow paint on the right side, which could be removed, but might also tell part of the story of this rifle. The bore is rifled, clean and shiny. The action is strong.
