Description:
This is a nice 3 band  1851 Springfield  musket owned by James Horace Morrison confederate Adjuntant Gereral,  were primarily manufactured 1842 TO 1853. The Morrison estate sale in Virginia included James Morrisons original sheep skin diploma from his guaduating in the clas of 1860 at V.M.I. and this model 1851 springfield.    Morrison was 6th in a class of 41 in 1860, Morrison became drill master in 1861 artillary at Pensacola, fla. in early 1861 ,then drill master at Norfolk, Va.  Appointed 1st lieut. in the Provisinal Army of VA. May 1st , 1861 and assigned ACTING ASSISTANT ADJUTANT GERERAL onthe staff of then Brig. gen.J.C.PEMBERTON ; Apppointed Pemberton's AID-DE-CAMP;Served briefly on the CSS WEBB ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER Feb 1863; captured at Vicksburg July 3rd 1864 commissioned !st Liuet vacated may 18th 1864 by PEMBERTON'S resignation. 1866 James Morrison returned to V.M.I.  as an instructor in tactics with many title changes moving up till his death in 1889 still teaching at V.M.I.. The rifle has the 1851 date on the lock plate, the oringinal barrel with is proofed vp eagle faint , the U.S. on the butt plattplate, the barrel is a smooth bore. the original brass end site is intact, the lock works smoothly going into the half lock and full lock positions. The nipple is in near mint condition with a rubber cap to protect it. The dark walnut is in great condition, and the three bands have a nice patina also. I belive this to be one of the rifles that was carried into the NEW MARKET BATTLE, where so many cadets died, I'm sure this is why Morrison had keep this rifle. This also has the rare original flared ramrod that is in above good to excellent condition, extremly hard to find this original part.  The Morrison estate was sold on Nov. 9th by Headly Berryville ,Va, the original hand bill for the sale, and other items from the Morrison estate sale are list including his diploma od 1860 ,fom V.M.I. . This gun also has the slide for the bayonet attachment and original sling attachments all in above good shape. This is a real peice of Confederate history. 859-533-5445 I also have pictures of Morrison in civian clothes, and a picture of his grave and stone ,which will come with the gun.
