Description:
Serial #101390, .30-40 Krag, 29 1/2" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has traces of freckling just starting to appear within the grooves. This is one of 2,001 small-bore Remington Lee military rifles contracted for by the Michigan National Guard in 1898 and 1899 to arm its infantrymen at the turn of the last century (the only other contract Remington received for this final Lee model was a 3,000 piece order to arm the post-Span-Am War Cuban Rural Guard). The rifles were serial numbered between 100001 and 102200 (not inclusive), and were delivered to the MNG in two batches, one in '98 and one in '99, with this particular example arriving in the second shipment. This example retains 80-85% of the original blue with the balance turning a pleasant plum-brown patina or silvered, especially at the muzzle and along the high edges and projections. The .30 caliber bolt has a commensurate amount of original blue remaining with silvering and gray fading on the bearing surfaces, and the Lee-Diss patent magazine and trigger guard have a pale blue-gray patina with some mild surface freckling throughout. The walnut stock and handguard are in fine shape with only scattered light handling marks and small bruises scattered throughout the added military oil finish, and some stable, hairline cracks on the rear of the handguard. Furthermore, there are crisp and clear unit and issue number stamps at the butt: “296" on the left at the heel, and “A/17" on the comb just ahead of the buttplate tang. The rifle comes with its original metal ramrod, and is a fine example of a lesser-known U.S. military rifle; perfect for a collection of rare American martial arms. {Ref. “The Remington-Lee Rifle", by Eugene Myszkowski; 1994} FFL or C&R
