RARE US SPRINGFIELD 1872 Artillery Officers Saber
Only 902 Made by Springfield Armory 1873-1902
Here we present an antique Springfield Armory Model 1872 Mounted Artillery Officer’s Saber, made circa 1883 at the Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. According to Burton Kellerstedt, this type was referred to as both the “Light Artillery Officers Saber” and the “Artillery Officers Saber”. While it was adopted in 1872, only one was apparently produced in that year. The Armory produced the rest of the 902 examples until between 1883 and 1902. This design is very Germanic in origin, most notably sharing the distinctive D handguard as well as the swept curve of the blade. The blade is 32 inches in length, has a 25-1/2 inch fuller that begins 6 inches from the point. The grip material would have been sharkskin, which has largely worn off of this example, exposing the ribbed wooden handle underneath. The braided wire wrap remains tight. There are no markings on this sword, which is correct. The only identifying mark is on the drag of the scabbard, and those are the initials “S.W.P.” for Master Armorer Samuel W. Porter. The scabbard retains its belt hanger. Overall condition is very good.
