Description:

“R. MOCK” Antique Half Stock KENTUCKY Rifle

Maker Marked w Inscription to Relative Made in 1870

Here we present an antique Full Stock Percussion Rifle, made in 1870. As it is inscribed: “R. Mock. Maker/at the age of 78 years/for/C.H. Mock/1870”. The top of the barrel is inlaid and also marked “R. MOCK”. The Mock family name is a prevalent one in Kentucky’s history. James R. Mock, G.S. Mock, and R. Mock were gun makers practicing their trade in Elizabethtown, Paducah, and Labanon, respectively. C.H. Mock was married to Elizabeth M. Lastinger by James Denmark on October 20, 1869 in Bulloch County, Georgia, according to records. He is then mentioned in the Democratic Standard of San Luis Obispo, California, on July 2, 1870: “New Saloon.----Mr. C. H. MOCK has rented the saloon formerly kept by Mr. Alexander MURRAY, and will open it in a few days, in an elegant style. Mr. MOCK is an old hand at the wheel, and we doubt not that he can sail the ship.” In all likelihood, this rifle was a parting gift from a senior relative to a newlywed young man headed out West to seek his fortune.

This .32 caliber rifle is simple and elegant, with a pewter cap on the fore end, brass trigger guard and butt plate, initial plates and inscription placard. The handwriting is precise and flowing. The back-action lock is marked “FORD BROTHERS” and features game birds among flora. For precision shooting this rifle is equipped with a longer, heavier octagonal barrel and a double set trigger.

Overall condition is near excellent. Corners on the octagonal barrel are sharp. Original finish is 75%. Markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is smooth and glossy, with just a few handling marks. The bore has sharp rifling and is clean. The action is excellent. It is evident that this gun was passed down with great care, and comes to us 147 years later with a great family name. You don’t find Kentucky guns of this quality and condition very often.
