Phenomenal CIVIL WAR U.S. 1840 MEDICAL STAFF Sword
Ornately Cast & Etched by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham
Here we present an antique US Model 1840 Medical Staff Sword, made circa 1861 and sold by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham of New York. These swords were mandated by military regulation for dress and ceremonial purposes, and purchased privately by medical personnel from military retailers. The gorgeously cast hilt is made of solid brass. The shapely handle features an eagle clutching a laurel and arrows in an oval on both sides. Pommel is a small fluted dome. The cross guard is feathered in appearance. The shield-shaped langet on the front has the silver letters “MS” mounted into it with 7 stars. The scabbard is iron with brass mountings featuring oak leaves and other foliage. The blade is beautifully acid etched in a floral design that extends about 2/3 up the blade on each side. One side of the blade is marked “SCHUYLER HARTLEY & GRAHAM NEW-YORK” and “M.S” for Medical Staff. The other side features a staff with a snake, which is called the “Rod of Ascelpius”. This represents the Greek god Ascelpius, a god associated with medicine.
The overall condition is very fine. The brass has a mellow patina. The iron bears a dark gray patina. The castings and etching are clear. This is a superior example of a rare US Medical Staff sword, which would be the centerpiece of the collection of any person in the medical profession.
