1870s Antique FRANK WESSON Two-Trigger .38 CARBINE
Handsome Nickel & Blue Breech Loading Carbine
Here we present an antique Frank Wesson Two-Trigger Carbine Type 2 in .38 Rimfire, made circa the 1870s in Worcester, Massachusetts. Only about 5,000 were made from the end of the Civil War to the mid-1870s. Frank Wesson was the younger brother of Daniel B. Wesson, of Smith & Wesson, as well as Edwin Wesson, who was also a highly-esteemed gunsmith in the mid-to-late-1800s. The fame of his family’s name was not lost on Frank, but he was, in fact, a prolific firearms designer and maker in his own right. He was granted patents in 1859 and began producing rifles of this two-trigger configuration. The Civil War was a fantastic opportunity for many different inventors and over 20 different carbines were used during the conflict on the Union side. Frank Wesson made a version of his rifle in a .44 caliber rimfire carbine format that was specifically geared for Cavalry troops. He also made carbines and rifles in various calibers for the commercial market.
This carbine features a 24-inch octagonal barrel marked “FRANK WESSON WORCESTER MASS.” with patent dates of 1859 and 1862. The rear sight is a two-leaf variety with the longer leaf having an aperture marked “250 YDS” and a notch at the top marked “500 YDS”. The frame and butt plate are nickel plated. The front trigger is used to open the barrel at the breech. There is a manual extractor on the right side of the barrel. The overall weight and feel is light, slim, and handy. The trigger is light and crisp.
The overall condition is about fine. The original nickel finish is 95%. The original blue finish on the barrel is 80%. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock shows some wear, but is in overall very good condition. Sling attachments have been removed, as has the slotted barrel link, which does not impede the function of the carbine. The bore is sharp and clean. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice carbine that would have competed against the biggest names in firearms history for a place in the scabbards of American citizens.
